Why I'm Here

Have you ever been right on the edge of things working out in your favor, only to suddenly have a bunch of things go wrong? Well, that is my financial situation right this moment.

Everybody writing a personal finance blog has something that pushed them there, and I am no different. Our family is doing everything right - we are a one-car family (and that car is a 10-year-old Corrolla), we are renting out part of our house to earn some extra income, and we used a loan from a family member to pay off our credit card debt and make interest-free payments to a family member instead of paying interest to a bank.

Then it all hit the fan - our water heater died, the alternator in the car died, we had to have a dying tree in our yard cut down before it fell and destroyed our house, and the dog needed expensive x-rays to check a growth on her spine. All told, we were hit with $5,000 worth of emergency expenses in the span of about three weeks.

Well, damn. Now what?

We are going to tackle this the only way we know how - cutting our spending and trying to find ways to earn some extra income, and just so that I have a way to look back at all the things we managed to do to save a little dough, I'm documenting all of it in this blog.

Welcome to our frugal journey.
